What is a Supply Chain?

In the world of logistics, it is often difficult to explain that our work goes far beyond transportation. Our role is not limited to scheduling the departure of a container on a ship, but encompasses a network of key processes and strategies to ensure an efficient flow of products and services.

When I mention to family or friends that I work in supply chain solutions, their expressions say it all… they have no idea what I’m talking about! And it’s not their fault, as the term "supply chain" is often directly associated with logistics, and logistics, in turn, is associated with transportation. That’s why I want to take this opportunity to explain what a supply chain really means.

Logistics as Part of the Supply Chain

Yes, logistics is a fundamental part of the supply chain. To me, the best definition of logistics is simple yet powerful: it’s about planning and executing the delivery of a product or service to the customer at the right time, in the right quantity, and in the right place, all at a competitive cost and using the least amount of resources possible.

Imagine a chain with multiple links. Each of these represents a key stage that products and services go through before reaching the final consumer. One link might be an iron mine, another a metal warehouse at a port, another a foundry plant in another country, followed by a lock factory, and finally, a hardware store. Although each link can operate independently, when they work together, they optimize processes and turn costs into value for the customer.

Where Does a Supply Chain Begin? What is the First Link?

The customer.

It all starts with the customer. The information and data they provide are essential for designing an efficient logistics strategy. We transform this data into intelligence and planning to ensure that the supply chain operates optimally and meets their expectations.

Essentially, a supply chain is the flow of information and materials through a network of suppliers and customers, with the ultimate goal of ensuring consumer satisfaction.

At Supplink, we help you analyze each step of the process and position yourself as the best option in your market. Want to know more? Contact us.
